My responsibilities at Salamis include acting as a DBA for their SQL Server databases, and developing solutions to fit the needs of the company, using a combination of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visual Studio and Crystal Enterprise technologies. The focus has very much been on enabling Intra- and Internet technologies to fill these requirements. I also provide day to day technical support for their ERP system (e by Epicor) as required, as well as occasional technical support and input for the Technical and Application Support functions. I am employed by WGE to fulfill a variety of roles. I act as a DBA for their Oracle RDBMS, and as an administrator for their UNIX servers. I also provide day to day second line support services for applications such as MAXIMO (procurement and maintenance), Cfacs (financial control), Business Objects (ad-hoc reporting) and Microsoft Office, whilst developing new solutions as required by the company, using a combination of Visual Basic, Crystal Reports, Microsoft Access, VBA, and Microsoft Internet Information Server technologies. Involved in the "Dialogues 2000" project - to create and test automated telephone systems, ideally to create standards, in partnership with BT and the DTI. My work involved building experimental setups using Visual Basic as well as proprietary telecom system languages, and use of packages such as SPSS, SyStat and Excel to deliver statistics on the results of experimentation. It also involved a lot of exposure to the public, who were invited to act as experimental subjects. Supervising Laboratory sessions for the "Introduction to Information Technology Fundamentals" course, reinforcing the theory of business computing the students were being taught with hands-on experience. My remit was to computerise the largest cabinet-making firm in the north of Scotland. This involved tailoring several off-the-shelf software products (Lotus SmartSuite, Sage Accounting, Windows) to suit the requirements of the company, and also the design and implementation of a number of bespoke applications using Access and Visual Basic for tasks such as job costing and marketing analysis. During my University vacations, I supervised the running of the petrol station attached to a busy supermarket. The job involved dealing with the public in a position of authority, making ordering and marketing decisions, managing the books and operator shifts, and ensuring the safety of both employees and customers. Included Human Factors Theory; Usability Theory; Usability Engineering; Graphics; Teaching Strategy; Networks and Distributed Computing; Knowledge Representation and Expert Systems; Software Development. Dissertation Topic: Document Management Systems: A World Wide Web Approach Included three years of Computer Science topics in addition to a mainstream Chemistry degree. Dissertation Topic: A Theoretical Study of CF3OCF3 and Related Molecules. Eight 'O' Grades, Five Higher Grades (Chemistry, English. Maths, Physics and History), and Three CSYS certificates (Chemistry, Maths, Physics). Also a liberal smattering of SCOTVEC vocational awards, including Computing, Music and Drama. I am an expert Visual Basic Programmer (all versions from 3.0). I also maintain a fair working knowledge of Perl, and C/C++. I have significant DBA experience with Microsoft Access and Oracle databases, and a fair working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server. I have experience with a wide variety of Web Servers, including Microsoft Internet Information Server, Apache and Spinner. I have administrative experience of Windows in 3.1, Workgroups, 95/98 and NT4 flavours. I am a member of the HTML Writer's Guild, and have a good knowledge of HTML and a good working knowledge of XML. I have administrative experience with Sun Solaris, versions 2.4 and 2.6, and 'power-user' experience of IRIX, ULTRIX. I hold a current, clean, UK Driver's License. I enjoy roleplaying and interactive drama - I am currently Chairman of the 'Otherdeen' group, running events for people in the Aberdeen area. I enjoy cookery, reading, movies, squash and socialising.
